The ORTOVOX AVABAG LITRIC TOUR 36S is a very technical, lightweight and durable avalanche backpack, ideal for multi-day ski touring and ski mountaineering. The LiTRIC combines the advantages of both electronic and mechanical systems . On the one hand, it allows multiple inflations per charge and at the same time is comparable to the lightest mechanical rescue system solutions (pressure cartridge systems).
With a volume of 36 liters and internal pockets, you will have enough space for all the equipment you need for a long ski tour. This avalanche backpack stands out with its wide range of equipment attachment options such as two ice axes, poles, carabiners, rope, helmet and skis. Comprehensive comfort is underlined by the 3D back system designed for demanding and long tours.
The main pocket has a waterproof two-way zipper , which can be opened sufficiently and you can see everything immediately and clearly. The interior is bright for better orientation in the dark. At the front of the backpack there is a special pocket for avalanche equipment , if necessary you will have a shovel and probe right at hand. Inside the main pocket there is also a clip for a water reservoir. In the front there is a small pocket for a map, compass and other navigation equipment. There is also a plastic carabiner for keys in this pocket. Although the backpack is made of soft material to the touch, the fabric used is extremely tear-resistant and very light . Every detail of the backpack is well-processed, durable materials are used and you don't have to worry about the edges of skis or ice axe tips.
Two strong outdoor brands, the German Ortovox and the Canadian Arc'teryx, have joined forces to create a new rescue system for avalanche backpacks. The airbag is filled with ambient air using a fan that draws energy from a supercapacitor. LiTRIC combines the advantages of both electronic and mechanical systems.
Litric can be transported by air without the need for paperwork, unlike systems that require a compressed air cylinder. Supercapacitors are passive elements with energy content. According to IATA rules, passengers can take up to 15 such items on board for personal use, each of which must fit within the 100 Wh limit. The Li-ion battery in LiTRIC has a capacity of 7.4 Wh.
The trigger or activation handle can be activated really quickly . Just turn it 180°, which alternates the activation position with the locked position. It is easy to do with one hand and there is no risk of unwanted activation, for example when riding a cable car. In addition, it can be adjusted to 3 height positions on the strap. You definitely don't have to worry, it will work even in really severe frosts. Activation is possible down to -30 °C. So you can enjoy the fluffiest powder.
After activation, easy deflation and packing , like a sleeping bag in a package, no folding and necessary procedure according to the instructions. The airbag compartment fuse (mechanical latch) ensures that this bag does not open unintentionally, e.g. in the event of a fall. After the trigger, it is a secondary fuse. For the 150l airbag itself, a two-layer material technology is used, which brings reduced weight and increased tear resistance. To deflate the inflated airbag, a safety key, which is part of the backpack, is used , and it is used to unlock the system so that you can quickly deflate and fold it.
Unlike a battery, which uses electrochemical reactions, a capacitor stores energy through static charge. A supercapacitor is ideal when a large amount of electrical energy is needed for a short time. This is exactly what the avalanche backpack fan needs to fill the airbag with ambient air. In LiTRIC, the power source is an integrated Li-Ion battery, which you know from your mobile phone. Recharging is very easy - via the USB-C cable, which is included in the package. Charging takes 2-3 hours . The airbag can be activated twice on one charge, but after the first activation, you must wait about 25 minutes for the supercapacitor to regenerate and the second inflation to take place without problems. On the side of the backpack, in the place of the system, there is a mesh window through which you can see a traffic light indicating the system's charge status (Green/Orange/Red).
The safety strap between the legs is designed in bright orange, for a quick and clear check of the correct securing before the descent. The purpose of the strap is to prevent the backpack from being torn off the body in a moving avalanche. Thanks to the design of the safety strap, the hip strap buckle can be conveniently clicked, as is common with non-avalanche backpacks. The click-on buckle of the hip strap thus significantly increases user comfort, especially when quickly unbuckling before boarding the cable car.
The avalanche backpack with the LiTRIC system consists of two parts. The backpack bag is attached to the BASE (back system) with the LiTRIC rescue system. This ensures the universal use of the backpacks from freeriding in the resort to a week-long Haute route. You can easily change it using the perimeter zipper and side straps.
1 LiTRIC - 2 back systems TOUR BASES and FREERIDE BASES (each in 2 back lengths). Each system can be attached with a zipper to 4 different bags. You can attach a backpack with a FREERIDE system to the TOUR back system and vice versa. On condition that the length of the backpack's back is maintained.
The back system is made of 3D molded memory foam. The back is softer to better follow the body's movements and not press any edges. The shoulder straps and hip belt are sewn directly onto the back system, so the weight of a full backpack is evenly distributed. The chest strap stabilizes the shoulder straps, which you will especially appreciate when skiing.
This variant of the “S” backpack is designed for people with a back length of 36 to 44 cm. The length of the back is calculated from the 7th cervical vertebra to the upper part of the pelvis. The backpack is not only adjusted in terms of the length of the back, but also changes in the shape of the shoulder straps and the adjustment of the hip belt. This makes the backpack fit perfectly and holds it more firmly on the back.
